COSMIC MESSAGE
M46 is a relatively young open star cluster, about 300 million years old. It contains a few hundred stars within its 30-light-year span. Located about 5,000 light-years away in Puppis, M46 also appears to contain an older planetary nebula, NGC 2438. This is a rare occurrence, as planetary nebulae are much older than open clusters.
