The Tail of the Small Magellanic Cloud

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Small Magellanic Cloud is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way, about 200,000 light-years away in the constellation Tucana. It is an irregular galaxy, with stars, gas, and dust forming a bar and an extended 'wing.' This infrared mosaic from the Spitzer Space Telescope reveals a tail of material extending from the galaxy. This tail is likely a result of gravitational interactions with the Milky Way.
