The Spotty Surface of Betelgeuse
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star, so large that if it were at the center of our solar system, it would extend past the orbit of Jupiter. While most stars appear as single points of light, astronomers used interferometry at infrared wavelengths to resolve its surface. This image shows two large, bright spots on Betelgeuse, which may be areas of intense energy release. It is about 640 light-years away in the constellation Orion.
