Maffei 1 and 2, two galaxies on the far left, were unknown until 1968. They were obscured by the opaque dust of our Milky Way Galaxy's central band. This infrared image from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, finds these galaxies in great detail. They appear next to the Heart nebula, IC 1805.
