The Einstein Cross Gravitational Lens

NASA APOD · J. Rhoads
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Einstein Cross is a striking example of a gravitational lens. The visible foreground galaxy bends light from a much more distant quasar, creating four distinct images of the quasar's nucleus. This phenomenon helps astronomers study both the quasar and the mass distribution of the lensing galaxy.
