The Medusa Nebula

NASA APOD · Bob Franke
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Medusa Nebula, also known as Abell 21, is an old planetary nebula in Gemini, about 1,500 light-years away. Its braided, serpentine filaments of glowing gas suggest its popular name. This phase represents a final stage in the evolution of low-mass stars, transforming them from red giants to hot white dwarfs.
