Retrograde Mars

NASA APOD · Tunç Tezel
COSMIC MESSAGE

Mars normally moves steadily across our sky, but about every two years, it appears to move backward, a phenomenon called retrograde motion. This happens when Earth overtakes Mars in its orbit around the Sun. This image shows Mars's path during one such recent event.
