From 350 kilometers above the southern Indian Ocean, astronauts on the International Space Station watched an enormous green ribbon shimmer below. This is the aurora australis, or southern lights. These luminous bands are caused by energetic charged particles from Earth's magnetosphere interacting with the atmosphere.
