Galaxies on a String

COSMIC MESSAGE

Galaxies NGC 5216 and NGC 5218 appear connected by a cosmic string of gas, dust, and stars, 22,000 light-years long. This interacting pair, also known as Arp 104, is 17 million light-years away in Ursa Major. Their distorted shapes and the connecting trail are a result of their mutual gravitational pull.
