Crepuscular Rays Over Lake Michigan

NASA APOD · Kurt Voigts
COSMIC MESSAGE

What caused these dark rays? Shadows. Clouds near the horizon block sunlight from reflecting off air, making columns appear dark. Cloud shadows are the complement of crepuscular rays, which are also visible. Sunlight pours through gaps in the clouds.
