Perseids and MAGIC

On August 11, 2021, the MAGIC telescope reflected this starry night sky from the Canary Island of La Palma. MAGIC stands for Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov, and its multi-mirror, 17-meter diameter surface is designed to detect brief flashes of light. These flashes occur when high-energy gamma rays impact Earth's upper atmosphere, creating particle air showers. To the dark-adapted eye, the mirror segments offer a tantalizing reflection of the stars.
