This multi-temporal illumination map of the Moon's south pole was created from 1,700 images. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's wide-angle camera collected data over six lunar days, or six Earth months. The stacked images show the percentage of time each surface spot was illuminated by the Sun, revealing permanently shadowed regions.
