Molecular Cloud Barnard 163
NASA APOD · T. Rector
COSMIC MESSAGE
Barnard 163 is a nebula of molecular gas and dust so thick that visible light cannot pass through it. Located about 3,000 light-years away in Cepheus, it is a region where gas can clump and form stars. The red glow in the background comes from hydrogen gas, ionized by nearby hot stars. This dark cloud, spanning light-years, is colder inside, creating conditions for star birth.
