This first image of a black hole's immediate surroundings resolves the area around the supermassive black hole at the center of galaxy M87. Radio telescopes around the Earth coordinated to capture this view. The dark central region is not the event horizon itself, but rather the shadow it casts against the glowing gas swirling around it.
