Wonder and Mystery above the Very Large Telescopes

This panoramic image shows the Very Large Telescopes under a night sky. On the far left, a diagonal band of zodiacal light is visible, which is sunlight reflected off dust in the inner Solar System. The bright white spot just above the horizon on the left is Venus, glowing by reflected sunlight. The orange orb above the telescope on the right is a mystery, even to seasoned sky enthusiasts.
