Lunar Farside

COSMIC MESSAGE
The Moon is tidally locked with Earth, always showing us its familiar near side. From lunar orbit, however, its far side becomes visible. This sharp mosaic, from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's wide angle camera, is centered on the lunar far side. Part of a global mosaic of over 15,000 images, it reveals features at a scale of 100 meters per pixel. The far side is more heavily cratered and lacks the large maria seen on the near side.
