Edwin Hubble's notations on a Mt. Wilson Observatory plate from the 1920s revealed the Andromeda Nebula's distance. This discovery proved the existence of galaxies beyond our own. The image shows his historic plate alongside modern views from ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble searched for novae, stars whose changing brightness helped him measure these vast cosmic distances.
