Gale Crater, 96 miles wide, sits near the Martian equator. This image from NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter shows a five-kilometer-high mountain at its center. Layers near the mountain's base suggest ancient water-carried sediments formed them. A spot at the foot of this mountain is now a target for exploration.
