Cocoon Nebula Wide Field

NASA APOD · Tony Hallas
COSMIC MESSAGE

In this crowded starfield in Cygnus, the eye is drawn to the Cocoon Nebula, IC 5146. This compact star-forming region punctuates a long trail of obscuring interstellar dust clouds. The nebula is nearly 15 light-years wide and located about 4,000 light-years away. Like other star-forming regions, it stands out in red, glowing hydrogen gas excited by young, hot stars, and blue, dust-reflected starlight at its edges.
