M82: Starburst Galaxy with a Superwind

NASA APOD · Dietmar Hager
COSMIC MESSAGE

M82, also known as the Cigar Galaxy, is a starburst galaxy with a superwind. The burst of star formation in M82, driven by supernova explosions and powerful winds from massive stars, is causing a prodigious outflow of material. Evidence for this superwind from the galaxy's central regions is clear in this sharp composite image. It highlights emission from filaments of atomic hydrogen.
