Geostationary Satellites Beyond the Alps

NASA APOD · Michael Kunze
COSMIC MESSAGE

Some points of light in this time-lapse movie appear stationary, unlike stars that typically rise and set. These are not stars, but human-launched robotic spacecraft. Called geostationary satellites, they remain fixed high above Earth's equator. They orbit Earth at a speed that matches Earth's rotation, making them appear motionless from the ground. This allows them to provide continuous coverage for communications and weather monitoring.
