Morning, Moon, and Mercury

COSMIC MESSAGE

The crescent Moon and Mercury rise together, captured here in a sequence of images from the Southern Hemisphere. Mercury, the solar system's innermost planet, was near its greatest elongation from the Sun. This meant it was visible far to the west of the Sun, making for an engaging sight for early morning observers. The pair climbed high above the horizon along a steeply inclined ecliptic plane.
