Volcano and Aurora in Iceland

NASA APOD · Sigurdur H. Stefnisson
COSMIC MESSAGE

Sometimes both Earth and the sky erupt at once. In 1991, Iceland's Hekla volcano erupted while auroras glowed overhead. Hekla is a famous volcano, having erupted over 20 times in the last millennium. The green auroral band was about 100 kilometers above the erupting lava, a fortuitous alignment.
