Gravitational Tractor

COSMIC MESSAGE

How would we change the course of an asteroid threatening Earth? One idea is a gravitational tractor, a spacecraft that uses its own mass to gently tug an asteroid off course. In this artist's concept, a massive spacecraft hovers near an asteroid. Its gravity, though small, slowly alters the asteroid's trajectory over time, preventing a collision. This method avoids direct impact, which could break an asteroid into many smaller, still dangerous pieces.
