A Hole in Mars

This unusual hole in Mars was discovered by chance on images taken by the HiRISE instrument on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The hole appears to be an opening to an underground cavern on the dusty slopes of Pavonis Mons volcano. Analysis shows the opening is about 35 meters across. The shadow inside indicates a deep cavern below the surface.
