This aurora over Crater Lake in Oregon shows an unusual pink color. Auroras are typically green at lower altitudes, around 100 kilometers high, where excited oxygen atoms emit light. While the general mechanisms are known, predicting the exact colors and occurrences of auroras remains an active area of study.
