COSMIC MESSAGE
This composite of images, taken from late October 2011 through early July 2012, traces Mars' retrograde motion. Mars appears to move backwards with respect to the background stars. This is not Mars reversing its orbit, but a reflection of Earth's motion as it overtakes Mars. The images were spaced about 5 to 7 days apart.
