Lenticular Clouds Over Washington

NASA APOD · Tim Thompson
COSMIC MESSAGE

Lenticular clouds form when moist air is forced upwards, often by mountains, and cools. The water vapor condenses into visible cloud layers. These clouds can stack vertically, creating striking patterns that sometimes resemble flying saucers. This particular display was captured over Washington state, where the phenomenon is not uncommon near mountainous regions.
