Baily's Beads near Solar Eclipse Totality
NASA APOD · Leonid Durman
COSMIC MESSAGE
Just before the Sun is completely covered during a total solar eclipse, bright beads of sunlight stream around the Moon's edge. This effect, known as Baily's beads, is named after Francis Baily, who described it in 1836. This image captures the phenomenon near totality. The number and brightness of the beads are now predictable due to detailed lunar mapping.
