Phobos: Doomed Moon of Mars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Phobos, one of Mars's two small moons, is an irregularly shaped object covered in craters. This image, taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, shows its asteroid-like appearance. Scientists believe Phobos and its sibling, Deimos, might be captured asteroids rather than moons formed alongside Mars. Phobos is slowly spiraling inward and is expected to break apart or crash into Mars in tens of millions of years.
