AE Aurigae and the Flaming Star Nebula

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

AE Aurigae is a runaway star, likely ejected from a collision of two star clusters. Its intense radiation ionizes the surrounding interstellar hydrogen gas, causing the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) to glow. The 'smoke' in the nebula is mostly hydrogen gas, along with dark filaments of carbon-rich dust grains, all located in the constellation Auriga.
