NGC 1309 is a spiral galaxy located about 100 million light-years away in the constellation Eridanus. It is about one-third the size of the Milky Way, spanning 30,000 light-years. The galaxy displays blue clusters of young stars in its spiral arms and an older, yellowish population in its core. Observations of supernovae within it help measure cosmic distances.
