Asperatus Clouds Over New Zealand

NASA APOD · Witta Priester
COSMIC MESSAGE

These unusual atmospheric structures, known informally as Undulatus asperatus clouds, were photographed over New Zealand. Their cause is currently unknown, but they do not appear to indicate severe weather. While most low cloud decks are flat-bottomed, asperatus clouds have significant vertical structure underneath. They are relatively unstudied and have even been suggested as a new type of cloud.
