NGC 3132: The Southern Ring Nebula

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Southern Ring Nebula, NGC 3132, is a planetary nebula created by a dim star, not the bright one, near its center. The glowing gas originated from the outer layers of a star similar to our Sun. This reprocessed image shows a hot, purplish pool of light surrounding a binary system, energized by the faint, hot star.
