COSMIC MESSAGE
High in the Chilean Andes, at 5,000 meters, this ice forest of "penitentes" reflects moonlight. These tall, blade-like formations, up to several meters high, minimize their shadows at local noon due to their shape and orientation. This region, near the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, experiences a dry, cold, thin atmosphere where sunlight drives the sublimation of ice, creating these unique structures.
