A Hole in Mars

This unusual hole in Mars was discovered by chance in 2011 by the HiRISE instrument aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The hole appears to be an opening to an underground cavern, partly illuminated in the image. Analysis revealed the opening to be about 35 meters across, with the interior shadow indicating a depth of at least 20 meters.
