The Antennae Galaxies in Collision

NASA APOD · Davide Coverta
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Antennae Galaxies, NGC 4038 and NGC 4039, are colliding in the constellation Corvus. While stars rarely collide due to the vast empty space within galaxies, the gravitational forces rip the galaxies apart. Dust and gas within the galaxies do collide, forming dark dust pillars and massive molecular clouds. This image captures the ongoing hundred-million-year collision.
