M78 and Reflecting Dust Clouds

NASA APOD · Ian Sharp
COSMIC MESSAGE

M78, in the constellation Orion, is a reflection nebula, glowing blue from the scattered light of nearby stars. Dark dust columns absorb some light and reflect others. The same scattering process that colors Earth's daytime sky enhances the blue in this region, which is about 1,600 light-years away.
