COSMIC MESSAGE

Messier 5, or M5, is a globular star cluster containing 100,000 stars or more, bound by gravity. It spans about 165 light-years in diameter and lies some 25,000 light-years away. Eighteenth-century astronomer Charles Messier described it as a 'Beautiful Nebula discovered between the Balance and the Serpent.' Though it appeared fuzzy to him, we now know it is a dense cluster of stars.
