The Orion Nebula is surrounded by intricate filaments of dust, as seen in this image. This dust, opaque to visible light, is created in the outer atmospheres of massive cool stars and expelled by strong stellar winds. The entire Orion field, about 1,600 light-years away, is filled with these dusty structures.
