The Tail of the Hamburger Galaxy

NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 3628, also known as the Hamburger Galaxy, is an edge-on spiral galaxy about 100,000 light-years across. It is 35 million light-years away in Leo. This image shows a puffy galactic disk divided by dark dust lanes, with a small satellite galaxy nearby. There is also a faint but extensive tidal tail, likely caused by gravitational interactions.
