CG4: A Ruptured Cometary Globule

NASA APOD · Jason Jennings (cosmicphotos)
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image shows a gas cloud known as a cometary globule, which has ruptured. Cometary globules are characterized by dusty heads and elongated tails, giving them a visual similarity to comets. However, they are vastly different, often serving as birthplaces for stars. Many young stars can be found forming within their heads.
