CMB Dipole: Speeding Through the Universe
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Our solar system is not at rest, and this all-sky map from the COBE satellite shows our motion relative to the cosmic microwave background radiation. Radiation in Earth's direction of motion appears blueshifted, while radiation in the opposite direction appears redshifted. This difference allows us to measure our speed through the universe, which is faster than our motion within the Milky Way or Local Group.
