AR 2192: Giant on the Sun

NASA APOD · Randall Shivak
COSMIC MESSAGE

You may have spotted a giant sunspot group on the Sun, even without a telescope. This sharp image shows AR 2192, a sprawling solar active region comparable in size to Jupiter. Like other sunspots, AR 2192 appears dark because it is cooler than the surrounding surface. This active region is currently crossing the Earth-facing side of the Sun.
