NASA APOD · Remus Chua (Celestial Portraits)
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Lagoon Nebula, M8, is a large star-forming region in Sagittarius, about 5,000 light-years away. It spans 100 light-years and is visible without a telescope. The open cluster NGC 6530, which formed in the nebula a few million years ago, contains many bright stars. The nebula is named for the dark band of dust that appears to divide it.
