What caused these layered Martian rocks? The leading hypothesis is an ancient Martian lake that evaporated and refilled over ten million years. It has been dry and empty of water for billions of years. The Curiosity rover took this image last November, showing one-meter-wide Whale Rock. It is part of the Pahrump Hills outcrop at the base of Mount Sharp.
