An Extremely Long Filament on the Sun
NASA APOD · Oliver Hardy
COSMIC MESSAGE
One of the longest filaments ever recorded on the Sun stretches across its face, longer than the Sun's radius at over 700,000 kilometers. A filament is hot gas held aloft by the Sun's magnetic field. From the side, it would appear as a raised prominence.
