Nacreous Clouds over Lapland

NASA APOD · Dennis Lehtonen
COSMIC MESSAGE

These vivid, iridescent clouds are called nacreous clouds, also known as mother-of-pearl clouds. They are a rare type of polar stratospheric cloud. They form when unusually cold temperatures in the lower stratosphere create ice crystals. Still sunlit at high altitudes, they glow with color, as captured in this photo over Lapland, Finland.
