The galaxy AM 0644-741, seen here by Hubble, is a ring galaxy. Its ring is 150,000 light years across, made of bright, new stars. This unusual shape is the result of a galaxy collision. When galaxies pass through each other, their stars rarely hit. Instead, gravity from the passing galaxy pulls at the other, creating these ring structures.
