Aurora Australis

NASA APOD · Robert Schwarz
COSMIC MESSAGE

These intense, shimmering lights are the Aurora Australis, seen here above Earth's geographic south pole. They were triggered by a coronal mass ejection from the Sun impacting the magnetosphere. The resulting geomagnetic storm created these stunning displays. This image was taken with a fisheye lens, with equipment in a heated box to withstand the extreme cold.
